colored paper: Emil Kretz
The somewhat manageable number of current literature on bookbinding, his relatives techniques and associated materials relating to a new release can not really go undetected, one would think. My friend Eberhard reported from a book the colored paper Verlag, Hamburg, which he earned on the BuBi trade fair in Cologne and it was still completely unknown to me, because I probably do not belong to the circle of the anointed one, which the little work has been offered.
Over the years of collecting and say, wants Aufhäufelns' of relevant literature, I immediately succumbed to the description of my possessiveness pulse, but borrowed the book. All Publishing Details:: here ::
The book, slightly larger than the famous island-books, comes in numbered, limited edition of 57 (2) S, printed on fine matt offset, top grade typografiert, bilingual German / English, hand-bound, color resolution, the stone printed reference paper, with pictures and pasted pattern leaflets, etc., etc. It is a very nice Pappbändchen where even the nagging spectator has no complaints that the work of well-known in Switzerland, book binder, trainer and colored paper maker Emil Kretz is dedicated. So much for
collector's item.
I read to me then the rendering of his techniques to the "glue batik papers" by which interest me added more than the worship of the almost forgotten master, I am also very pleased because I can understand his complicated-day production process well: Best paper, fresh wheat starch paste, clear or tinted light, hand-carved molds or rolls of a simple Abrolltechnik, thinned oil paints and a lot of water to wash the dried paste and even more time to dry the paint. There is also no mention of the alternative coloring with diluted ink for those (like me), which is contrary to the dilution of chemicals.
Emil Kretz is another good example of the do so in our culture, created and lovingly cherished Board book more attention and the necessary reference documents timely to make and durable produce, without the often tümelnden, old-fashioned design sensibilities of Bookbinders generations the 30s, 40s and 50s chasing, or to shop for convenience finished goods from Italy or Nepal. For my part, I have to think up something now, what can I put on about 1.2 square meters heated workplace and about 2 square meters unbeheizbarem work in the basement. That would exciting to think my better half by far.

New German fairy tale treasure. With 30 full-color illustrations. Scherl Verlag Berlin SW 1905. "
This was an evening reading in decades working honorably aged book of fairy tales with severely damaged binding printed without a back, but completely, however, darkened, wobbly, strong mechanical paper. The pages on trimming fragile and flawed.
Strange tales are found in it, all well Neudichtungen from the beginning of the nineteenth century and written by people who can hardly ergoogeln yet. To some illustrators I could find info. Typo and graphics are a wild mix of neualtdeutscher fracture and emerging Art Nouveau style with lively design and bold colors, printed on coated paper in the very early offset.
The cover boards were not using anymore. Sewing was not as good as as all documents were defective in a fraction, initial adhesion tests with Japanese paper I have given up quickly. So I cut back on the old completely after I had the rusty brackets before aufgebröselt individually drawn. With the help of the adhesive bond Lumbeck'schen the matter was again hold, however, all attempts to round the back failed, so then the straight shape.
linen, ink jet printed back, Zerkallbütten reference, as the new intent. Journal of a rescued old intent I have included as a (false) frontispiece. The fox is heavy with the damaged the second leaf.
there who has an idea what to do with the resurgence of imperial book of fairy tales? Who collects as story books? To Mrs B. v. H. reclaim from the book to the grandchildren from getting something worth reading? I gladly await suggestions!

bookbinder curiosity: German history and the production of marbled paper. Quotes and personal notes
The old Franz White , Professor at the "Hanseatic University of Fine Arts" in the 40s of last century and Author of the book 'The art of marbling, "made me really curious.
one hand: His enthusiasm zeigenössisch-deutschtümeligen outbreaks I ignore generous, occasionally emerging to play to laugh, and realize then, was the man through and through a gifted artisans, artists, teachers. His publication proves it.
I can imagine without difficulty, as he is with his apprentices / students, male as female in a white smock, with a multi-day Marmorierkurs, jogging '. Retardation was not, that would be , Un 'was.
The chapter "German / un" I close with two quotes. White writes in the preface a dig at the "Franz Band", without naming them: "... the leader's will from this book [is] into the workshops of the masters and artists, and obtained there the his purposes serving beauty in the book cover- . trade in which the Board book plays a role wohlzubeachtende "
on page 11 is a 'German' broadside: " ... who [the inventor of the marbled paper was] the gods alone know it yet revealed any researcher. [...] In the past, the papers were traded as "Turkish" or "Dutch" papers, strangely not as "German", although it is suspected that many have been made of them in Germany. Our Könnertum stood in the background and others were doing so great. This is different now, we are awake! This book ensures that our work in the world get the respect it deserves " then be reconciled me schießlich, final word '. "We are at the end fanget to,"
On the other hand, marbling I can not, I admire this art is always from a distance, because I have problems with the caustic smell of turpentine or dilution dissolved colors. This was also a reason to read the White, who taught for the marbling with water-based inks, for reasons of economy in the first place. Teigfarben called it yet until a few years and had had at bookbinders in use, make the color cuts. Meanwhile, they are no longer manufactured, according to my research, and the last remains were sold off. This party is referred to the acrylic paint.
Next keyword: "ox bile. Maybe I did not catch up today or read, but White is to dilute its Teigfarbe ox bile. He also recommends the use of "gall water", that is a dilute mixture to show through the paper color. The next cue, clip made me was the "spirit of soap, which he diluted pure, or Gallen added to water heavily diluted and that an "Sprenkelwasser" shall.
will rejoice Experienced MarmoriererInnen, that these are all old chestnuts that. The inexperienced remote observer, exactly what I am and so far wg. his allergic reactions to the dilutions afraid to approach a Marmorierwanne has now taken up the trail. To this day I believe the experts, that "everything right with oil paints and is Suminagashi something else is." I will start times on a small scale experiments, as does the whole because with water based inks. Slowly, I suspect, like the strange and beautiful (sun) papers of the old extended Dutch artist Karli Frigge bookbinding incurred.

Franz White complained in his text, too, that was so much disappeared from the ancient knowledge forever. Right, because in the Middle Ages many a paper collar woman burned at the stake, because the block-stupid guys from the judiciary and the church presumes to denigrate this fine craftsmanship as witchcraft and Allchemie. Probably the most bloodthirsty executioner, the bonfires are lit with a Öltunkpapier - it burns well containing

How To Project From Desktop To Projector
Bookbinding makes you curious - Marbling
slumbered for years in one of my storage boxes a true. Schatz, criminally ignored. A little behind the title of Mr. White herrecherchiert, I found a fairly high price in the bookseller, 70 - 80 € for a modest in original condition, an only slightly reduced price for hand-embedded photo copies (45 - 50 €) and a premium price for an English translation in the U.S. ($ 500, limited edition, hardcover).
The original is (was) limited necessarily strict, given according to the American Antiquarian text " Most copies of the original The art of marbling were destroyed in a World War II bombing raid."
And now I am happy not only about the pretty little book on my shelf, I read humbled by the stale, but lovingly formulated German of the famous Professor White (yes, yes!), Who was also a gifted bookbinder must be no, now I am also proud to have saved the 'whites to'.
