Summary
The majority of European countries, including Lithuania guaranteed certain conditions so that women could raise their children to certain age in the Haftantstalt. The age to be left to the children with their mothers in prisons is regulated differently in European countries - from zero to six years. But usually the maximum age limit is three years. Such age limit is set in the Lithuanian laws. As the only country in the region, Norway has banned the placement of children with their mothers in prison altogether. Because of the different Views, a problem arises, what about the child better, to live with his mother in prison, or separated at birth by his mother to be? Therefore, in this paper this problem is analyzed.
By giving the states the mothers an opportunity to raise their children in prison, they undertake to create the most favorable conditions, so that relations between the mother and the child could be developed fully satisfying. Also need to create such an environment be created that would possible have less negative impact on the child. International organizations, such as the European Parliament, the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, etc., take care of the situation of imprisoned pregnant women and mothers who have young children.
in Lithuania is the only prison in Panevezys, in penance for not only pregnant women and mothers with small children (babies), but also women of their criminal sentence. Such a situation arose because only Panevėžys prison has corresponding conditions to raise the babies. The Lithuanian laws provide benefits for pregnant women and mothers with children up to three years, as these women get more food. Still respect the national Laws too little on the situation of such women and therefore this situation must be changed. This can only be achieved if our state will take into account the international conventions, recommendations of the European Parliament.
